About Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

If you, or your child, suffer from bouts of unexplained vomiting, you may have Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS).

Any repetitive unexplained vomiting needs to be reviewed by your GP but if they can’t explain why you have been vomiting for 2 weeks, or why you are vomiting several times an hour, have the sweats and get headaches associated with your vomiting, the problem may lie in the muscles and nerves in your neck.

Vomiting is commonly a symptom of Migraine, which is closely associated with the neck. Children are commonly recognised to suffer from abdominal migraine which is when a problem in their neck refers pain into their stomach, instead of their head.  CVS has very similar neural patterns as its more commonly diagnosed variant, abdominal migraine.

Symptoms of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome in Adults

  • Sudden onset unexplained vomiting lasting 1 hour to 14 days
  • Regular vomiting pattern ranging from 4 times an hour to every few hours
  • Intense Nausea
  • Heavy sweating
  • Neck pain and Headache
  • Episodes of vomiting occur every few weeks to every 12 months

Symptoms of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome in children

  • Sudden onset vomiting last 1 hour to all day (shorter duration)
  • Nausea and sweating
  • Shorter duration between episodes, commonly weekly episodes

Treatment for Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

Neck physiotherapy can help treat Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

The Physiotherapists at the Headache Neck and Jaw Clinic are experts in determining whether the symptoms you are suffering form are coming from your neck or your jaw and Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome is no different.

Headaches and migraines originating in your neck (cervicogenic headaches) can commonly lead to symptoms of nausea and vomiting, and occasionally, vomiting becomes the primary symptom.  Our Physios can easily and safely assess your neck, without making you feel nauseas or making you vomit (no-one wants that) and determine whether your vomiting is a symptom of a neck disorder.

If you believe you may be experiencing Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, book an appointment with the Headache, Neck and Jaw Clinic today for expert assessment and treatment.
