Here at the Headache, Neck, and Jaw Clinic, we see plenty of patients dealing with persistent neck pain and headaches who can’t find lasting relief. Our team of physiotherapists are specialists in the field, trained in a range of specific techniques to treat a number of conditions.

Along with The Watson Headache Approach, the McKenzie Method is one of the main techniques we use to offer hope to anyone suffering from persistent headaches. Our clinics regularly recommend McKenzie Method physio because it puts the focus on patient self-treatment rather than passive therapies. The approach has shown remarkable results for headaches that stem from neck problems.

Let’s explore how the McKenzie Method works, why we use it in our practice, and most importantly, how it can help you break free from those debilitating headaches that affect your daily life.

What is the McKenzie Method and How Does it Work?

Robin McKenzie, a New Zealand physiotherapist, pioneered the McKenzie Method (officially known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy or MDT) in the late 1950s.

McKenzie said the idea for the method stemmed from a chance incident in his clinic where a patient with persistent back and leg pain accidentally lay on an elevated treatment table for five minutes. His pain then moved from his leg to the centre of his back before vanishing completely.

Following this discovery, he found that certain movements and postures could help patients relieve pain and restore function. He also believed that with time and care, most patients could learn how to treat themselves, removing the need for constant heat and ultrasound treatments, which were popular at the time.

What’s different about the McKenzie Method?

The McKenzie Method emphasises self-management over passive treatments. Rather than only relying on infrequent sessions with your physiotherapist for treatment, the McKenzie Method gives you a set of unique, targeted exercises that you can do yourself every day.

That means you’ll be able to quickly tell whether physical treatment is helping relieve your pain. You won’t have to wait weeks or months to know whether this treatment is effective, and most physiotherapists can tell whether your problem will improve quickly, slowly, or is unlikely to respond to treatment in as little as one session.

That’s both more efficient and more cost-effective than multiple GP or physio visits with significant gaps in between. Plus, it puts the path to recovery in your hands, giving you control in a time when recurring pain might feel like it’s taking over your life.

How does it work?

The McKenzie Method focuses on simple movements, education, and self-management so you feel confident and in control of your progress. It generally follows four steps:

  1. Assessment

We start by listening carefully to your story. We talk about your symptoms, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life.

We then look at how your body moves and whether any movements feel restricted or uncomfortable. You may be guided through some repeated or gentle sustained movements so we can see how your symptoms respond.

  1. Classification

Based on how your symptoms behave during the assessment, we identify the type of problem you may have. Many people fit into common patterns related to posture, movement, or joint function. This helps us choose the most helpful exercises and movements for you.

  1. Treatment

We develop a practical and personalised treatment plan. We find movements or positions that ease your symptoms and show you how to use them at home or work.

  1. Prevention

A big part of MDT is helping you stay well. We guide you on posture, movement habits, and simple exercises so you can manage your own recovery confidently. Our goal isn’t just short-term relief, but giving you the knowledge and tools to prevent future flare-ups and stay active.

Our experience has shown this approach works well to treat disk-related problems and neck issues that cause headaches.

How the McKenzie Method Helps With Headaches and Neck Pain

Cervicogenic headache (CGH) is characterised by pain that starts in the neck and spreads to the head or face. Patients often experience dizziness, nausea, and visual disturbances, or can even trigger migraines. The McKenzie Method provides a clear path to relief for our patients who want to find lasting relief from these symptoms.

The approach tackles headaches through directional preference. Our physiotherapists look for specific neck movements that centralise your pain. When pain moves from widespread areas back toward the centre, it shows healing progress. This method helps cervicogenic headaches by targeting joint positioning and muscle imbalances effectively. These systematic movements decrease pressure on sensitive structures and restore natural joint mechanics.

Unlike treatments that need ongoing professional help, The McKenzie Method is a great way to get self-management skills. You’ll learn to spot early warning signs and respond with appropriate exercises, meaning you won’t have to rely on pain medications or other expensive treatments.
